Farmacólogo estadounidense. Obtuvo su Ph.D. en la Universidad Harvard. Por casi 40 años, él y Gertrude Elion, diseñaron una variedad de drogas nuevas que operan obstaculizando la replicación u otras funciones vitales de agentes patógenos específicos; entre estos medicamentos figuran los destinados al tratamiento de la leucemia, la artritis reumatoide grave y otras enfermedades autoinmunes (también útiles para suprimir el rechazo en los trasplantes de órganos), la gota, el paludismo, infecciones urinarias y respiratorias, y el herpes simplex. En 1988 compartió el Premio Nobel con Elion y James Black.
